Stepping up and stepping out, jazz style...

On a wet and windy Saturday, Second Line NI Music Promise Grantee called upon all music lovers to strut their stuff in the city’s first ever jazz street parade.

All that jazz

On the weekend of the city's Jazz and Big Band Festival, Second Line NI ,Music Promise Grantee, called upon all music lovers to come and strut their stuff in the city’s first ever jazz street parade as part of the UK City of Culture Music Promise for 2013.

Derry City Jazz Festival favourites, JayDee Brass Band, led a New Orleans style ‘second line’ procession as part of this year’s festival and the official launch of Second Line NI.

Second Line street performances have always been connected to New Orleans, traditionally heralded as the birthplace of Jazz. Combining music, jubilant dancing, and brightly decorated umbrellas, a second line is a chance for everyone to let loose and get a taste of that New Orleans vibe.

Along with JayDee Brass Band, this year’s inaugural procession also included musicians from local schools/colleges as well as well-known performers from the city. Full pageantry was on show with local community groups displaying their recently decorated umbrellas from Shipquay Street to the Ebrington Square.

A swinging, sassy, syncopated, success of a street party!
